feedbuzzard today
I guess the biggest story today is of a Yahoo! Publisher Network outage which apparently lasted for hours. Plus, the usual good tips and stories from Darren Rowse.

Search Engines as Leeches - right.
I think I’m with Jason Calacanis on this one, this approaches The stupidest thing I’ve read in a long time…
I’m talking about Jakob Nielsen’s post- Search Engines as Leeches on the Web
wherein he says
Search engines extract too much of the Web’s value, leaving too little for the websites that actually create the content. Liberation from search dependency is a strategic imperative for both websites and software vendors.
Balderdash! Sure, it’s nice to have a faithful readership, but I depend on search traffic: I wouldn’t even bother with my blogs if it weren’t for search traffic. Also, just what is it on Google’s SERPS that they have taken from my sites? My desription line and a few keywords? Damn! Sue!

A phonecall from YPN
When I got home from work today I pushed the button to get my messages from the answering machine as usual. What wasn’t usual was that there was a message from the folks at YPN (Yahoo! Publisher Network), the Google AdSense competitor. They said they noticed I had applied for the YPN beta program, but never followed up and signed up to start using their advertising network. Did they not notice that they were calling outside the U.S. ? You see, participants of the program must have a valid U.S. Social Security or Tax ID number, and web site content that is predominantly in English and targeted at a U.S. user base. Well, I am situated in Canada so I couldn’t sign up.
A humorous side-note to this is that when I found out I couldn’t join, I listed the YPN Invite on eBay. Heck, why not? Back in the day I made a good bit of loot flogging GMail invites on eBay! People were PAYING TO GET AN EMAIL ADDRESS! Anyway, eBay took the auction down so I never learned the true value of the YPN Invite.![]()
Related to this, I see that Problogger Darren Rowse is experimenting with YPN and early reports indicate a lower CTR but higher CPC resulting in similar earnings to AdSense, although it’s really too early to draw any conclusions.
