The Growth of Earnings

Problogger Darren Rowse writes about the growth curve in earnings attainable from blogging with Adsense ads to generate income. He writes-

I’ve had a number of emails from readers in the last few days who are disillusioned with their earnings with Adsense. I can perhaps take some of the blame for their mood having posted my reality check post last week and by publishing the poll that we have running that highlights that the majority of bloggers using Adsense are only making a dollar (or three) per day.

I have experienced similar findings however my road has even been bumpier. That may be because my numbers are so much smaller :( so fluctuations appear larger. Also see my other post about my coming out of the sandbox. The key point is, this takes time. I was explaining this to somebody at work like this- It’s kind of like an insurance salesman, who’s portfolio of customers grows continually over time. But the earnings from new business and the old business is cumulative in a manner of sorts. The more “inventory” you have in your blog, the greater your odds of being searched out by someone on the net, and the more eyeballs you get to your blog, the higher your earnings.

The $100 per Day in 12 Weeks Challenge

This morning I came across Ryan Sheehy’s blog in which this entry caught my eye.

The US$100/Day In 12 Weeks Challenge
If you are a regular participant to the popular internet marketing blogs and forums you would no doubt have come across this latest little craze where people are accepting this challenge of trying to make US$100/day within 12 weeks.

The rules:
* You cannot pay for anything UNLESS you have already earned that money from your internet project(s)
* You cannot use any of your existing web sites to help your internet project(s)
* You cannot use any software that you’ve already purchased to help your internet project(s)
* You cannot use any subscription(s) that you’ve already purchased to help your internet project(s) (e.g. WordTracker)

Sounds like some of these people have too much time on their hands. I bet that more than a few of them get banned from Adsense (if that is what they choose to use).

The Google Sandbox

While reading at this site or elsewhere about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) you may have come across the term The Google Sandbox. What is the Google Sandbox? Well, the sandbox is actually nothing more than a theory developed to explain what many SEO experts have observed with their websites. Whether or not the sandbox really exists, we know that the effects of the sandbox exist.

This happened after the widely publicized updates of Austin and Florida, and the implementation of what is known as the Austin update in 2004. If you are not sure what those are, there is no need to worry as those updates are now for the most part in the past.

The sandbox filter seems to affect nearly all new websites placing them on an initial “probation” status. The effect of this is that new websites may get into Google’s SERP’s (search engine results pages) relatively quickly and may even perform well for a couple of weeks. When the filter is applied to the new website it is referred to as being put in the “sandbox”. The sandbox filter seems to affect almost all new websites, with very few exceptions. It is important to note that the filter is not a punishment for anything the webmaster did with their new website. The filter is merely an initiation period for new websites and generally lasts anywhere from 6 to 8 months.

If you have a new website, there is a good chance that you will be placed in the sandbox. This website is in the sandbox as of this writing. I have another website which just came out of the sandbox, and both page visits and my adsense earnings have exploded ever since. This is good to know as it gives you time to hone your web building skills in the early days when it doesn’t really impact your page ranking much. While your website is in the sandbox, you should use this time to build your traffic using regular traffic building methods such as writing articles, building a strong community of visitors, and partnering with websites that offer some synergy to your visitors. During your time on probation, you have an excellent opportunity to build all the elements that cause websites to perform well in the search engines. When you finally do leave the sandbox, your website should be very well positioned within Google.

If you find your site stuck in the sandbox, wait. That’s all that you can do.
